For Personal Trainers
As Psychologists working with overweight, obese and eating-disordered clients, we offer PTs training and client consultancy.
There are a myriad of reasons why a person develops weight problems and struggles to commit to an exercise program. In our work we conceptualise overeating or emotional eating as a way of coping with overwhelming feelings. When we think about eating disorders, our minds usually go straight to Anorexia Nervosa – a crippling disorder where the sufferer looks distressingly underweight, and is at risk of literally starving themselves to death.
But in the dark and secretive world of disordered eating, binge eating, yo-yo dieting and overeating are common dirty little secrets. For some reason, underweight people demand our attention and concern. We fear for them. They look unhealthy, and fear revolves around the fact that they are literally starving themselves to death. But when it comes to overweight and obese people, we are somehow blind to their distress and suffering.
As Psychologists, we conceptualise eating disorders as disordered eating or eating that is not in the conscious control of the sufferer – eating that not only has unhealthy physical consequences but is also psychologically distressing.
As well as falling into the classic yo-yo dieter category, overweight people are notorious for dropping out of gym programs and struggling with exercise routines. These people are vulnerable to the latest diet and exercise fads, but when they don’t work, they are quickly disillusioned and give up feeling like a failure. We work with PTs to help them understand what’s going on for these clients, why they struggle to commit to an exercise program, and how to keep them engaged.
