Seminar Description
This seminar will demonstrate a comprehensive approach of how Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can interact for powerful results that bring satisfaction for both client and clinician. The seminar will explain how emotions can be explored through examining a client’s thoughts, feelings and behaviour from a CBT and ACT perspective. The presenter, Dr Carolyn Youren will elucidate the theoretical background paying particular attention to where ACT and CBT can be overlayed for a dynamic interaction, and thorough exploration of emotions and barriers to action. Specific CBT and ACT interventions will be discussed and used to illustrate this theoretical collaboration. CBT interventions include (but are not limited to): identifying and exploring core beliefs, understanding automatic thoughts, development of rational response, identifying unhelpful thinking styles, behaviour activation, scheduling/planning, exposure and response prevention. ACT interventions include (but are not limited to): diffusion, expansion, connection, observing self, values, committed action. Application to the treatment of Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders and for building resilience will be explained and illustrated.
